Providence Torah Yisro/2010-Rabbi Shimshon Pincus
Feb 4th, 2010 by tkarp
I would like to share with you a beautiful idea about Shabbos from
Rabbi Shimshon Pincus ztz”l (1944-2001, one of the great rabbis of our
generation known for his thoughts on the chumash and Jewish
Philosophy).
Rabbi Pincus asked, if Shabbos (the Sabbath) is “zecher l’maaseh
b’raishis”, a remembrance of the act of creation, why do we stop doing
work on Shabbos? How is this a remembrance of G-d’s actively creating
the world?
When we remember creation, we are not simply remembering the creation,
but we are reminding ourselves that G-d cares about and is involved in
all of our lives. G-d not only created the world, he continues to run
it until this very day. Our resting on Shabbos is a statement of our
emunah, our belief that while we put in our hishtadlus, effort,
everything is in His hands.
If we keep this idea in mind, it will enhance our Shabbos and help us
keep our focus on what is really important in life.
Have a wonderful Shabbos!
Naftali
