Learning from Abe Schmell #26

Based on Rav Yehonasson Eibeschutz’s Tiferess Yehonasson
Mr.Schmell was known for his honesty and integrity in business.
One way which he used his hard earned money, was to become a member of as many shuls as possible. When money is going towards a shul or any mitzva,we want to be extra confident that such money is kosher.
Mr.Schmell didn’t have that problem.
Today’s dvar Torah from Rav Yehonasson honors these ideals.
In this week’s parsha, Yisro finds his son-in-law Moshe, judging a long line of Jews. Yisro insists that this situation is no good for both Moshe and his congregants. He goes on to outline a tiered court system which will make life easier for all. Hashem basically concurs.
The day Moshe was seen with the line, was the day after Yom Kippur. The Jews had spent the day before, doing repentance. That holiest of days only helps though, for sins against G-d. As for sins against mankind, one must be honest with themselves about what they have done and make good on it.Initially, a person tends to justify their money activities/offenses and fails to view owed money for this or that, as a true debt(i.e.Why should I have to pay for that shoddy job!!). Over Yom Kippur however, a person tends to become more true to themselves about these dollars.
This is what those Jews in the line were doing.
Yom Kippur had clarified money issues for them and now they were ready for a full repentance of money possibly due another. Now they were ready to go to Moshe’s court to face the decisions he would render.
This may also account for the extra long line which Yisro saw. There was just a multitude of Jews who wished to complete the Yom Kippur repentance process.
Furthermore, the Jews would soon be donating to the Mishkon, our first real Temple. The Jews realized that to contribute to this, their assets must be pure of any dishonesty. Thus they lined up to go to court to be sure that what they owned really was theirs .
Then they would be ready to make kosher donations for the Mishkon.
Mr.Schmell’s donations to his many Jewish causes were just as kosher as the baked goods in his bakery. And how.
